DeSmogBlog: Former Clinton and Bush Cabinet Members, Now Oil and Gas Lobbyists, Expect Keystone XL Green Light

The Tar Sands Blockade of TransCanada Corporation's "Keystone XL South" continues in Texas, but former members of the Clinton and George W. Bush cabinets believe the northern half will soon be green-lighted by President Barack Obama.?

In a Nov. 13 conference call led by the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), an oil and gas industry front group, CEA Counsel John Northington said he believes a "Keystone XL North" rubber stamp is in the works by the Obama Administration.?

?I think the Keystone will be approved in fairly short order by the administration,? Northington said on the call.

Northington has worn many hats during his long career:

[He] served in the Clinton Administration at the Department of the Interior as Senior Advisor to the Director of the Bureau of Land Management. Mr. Northington also served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management with energy policy responsibility for the former Minerals Management Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Mr. Northington began his government service at the Department of Energy, where he served as White House Liaison, Chief of Staff for the Office of Fossil Energy and Senior Advisor for Oil and Natural Gas Policy.

After his tenure working for the Clinton Administration, he walked through the revolving door and became a lobbyist, representing many clients over the past decade, including the oil and gas industry. Northington has represented ExxonMobil, Devon Energy, CONSOL Energy, and?Statoil. ExxonMobil, Devon and Statoil all have a major stake in the tar sands.?

Northington was joined?on the call by?Michael Whatley, CEA's Executive Vice President. Whatley seved as?senior policy advisor for the Bush-Cheney 2000 campaign,?Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Department of Energy under George W. Bush and as?Chief of Staff of former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC).?

CEA fronts for?HBW Resources, a lobbying firm run by David Holt, Andrew Browning and Whatley (hence the "HBW"), with a developed speciality of lobbying on behalf of the tar sands industry.

Whatley, above and beyond working for the Bush Administration, Sen. Dole and CEA, has also lobbied on behalf of ExxonMobil?and?General Electric?(GE). GE, like ExxonMobil, also has a fiscal present and future interest in tar sands production.?

Win, Win for Some; Lose, Lose for Most: Tar Sands With Or Without Keystone XL

Though outfits like CEA are working overtime to ensure "Keystone XL North" is built soon, there are other ways to skin the cat and bring tar sands crude to market. The most important one, covered here on?DeSmogBlog and in a recent story published by the?Calgary Herald, is freight rail.?

Warren Buffett, the "Oracle of Obama," has a major financial stake both in tar sands production, as well as in moving tar sands to market via the Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) freight trains he owns under the auspices of his holding company, Berkshire Hathaway.

Buffett gave over $60,000 to the Democratic National Committee during the 2012 election cycle, as well as another $70,000 to President-elect Barack Obama, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings.?

?Railroads too present environmental issues. Moving crude on trains produces more global warming gases than a pipeline,? explained Bloomberg?in January 2012.

BNSF isn't the only rail company eager to move tar sands crude to market. Southern Pacific also envisions a major market opening for freight rail transport. A recent Calgary Herald?story explains,

While Canadian and U.S. railways are scrambling to meet demand, opening small terminals close to production in locations such as the Bakken area of southern Saskatchewan and North Dakota, the Athabasca oilsands have not been part of the rush. Until now....Unlike pipelines, that means no public hearings and no environmental protests.

The verdict is in.

Chock it up to yet another win-win for the oil and gas industry and a lose-lose for all who have to suffer the consequences of the ecological damage in Alberta, as well as the climate change amplified disasters it's engendering around the world.?

KANSAS CITY, Mo.: Liquid calories count: Sugary drinks pour on the ...

    ? The Kansas City Star

? Sixteen-year-old Montana Ivory had been an excellent customer for Coke, Mountain Dew and Monster Energy - until he got the message about calories.

"I'd end up drinking a half-liter and not even notice it was gone," Ivory said. "And I didn't pay attention that a serving size is 8 ounces, and I would drink four or five times that."

After Ivory attended a program at the University of Kansas Medical Center, he started reading labels and rejecting sugary drinks. Not easy.

"I was unhappy because I love that stuff," he said. "But now my potbelly is starting to shrink down."

While the multibillion-dollar sugary beverages industry - soft drinks, juices, energy drinks, coffee concoctions - flows happily on, the science is becoming crystal clear: If you want to lose or control weight, drink no calories. Or very few.

It's the same for old and young. In a new and unusual study of more than 200 overweight or obese 14- to 16-year-olds, researchers delivered bottled water and diet drinks to families, then counseled them to drink the no-calorie beverages rather than their usual sweetened drinks.

After a year, participants who received the water and diet drinks gained an average 4 pounds less than the control group, a significant finding considering it was the only lifestyle change in the study, said Cara Ebbeling of Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Ivory wasn't in the Boston study, but he did lose 15 pounds, down to about 200, and ultimately wants to weigh closer to 170. He's also eating better and exercising more. Doable?

"If I stick to the plan," he said.

The message is out there, the science is in, but many of us are still guzzling the calories. Americans consume 300 calories more a day than they did three decades ago, and a substantial part of that increase comes from beverages.

It's a hard habit to break.

One problem, Ebbeling said, may be that people aren't distinguishing between sensations of hunger and thirst. Consciously and correctly responding to those cues is key, she said.

"When you're thirsty, you need water as opposed to calories," she said. "Calories are needed when you're hungry."

A big issue is ready availability. An important idea in the study, Ebbeling said, was to change the home environment so that sugar-free drinks were available - and to encourage choosing them over sweetened beverages.

The ubiquity of giant drinks was the reason for the recent New York City ban of sweetened beverages larger than 16 ounces. Recent ballot measures in two California cities would have taxed sugary beverages to the tune of $1.44 for a 12-pack, but voters rejected both proposals last Tuesday.

And earlier this month, Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City announced that starting in January, sugary drinks would not be sold in the hospital.

Joan O'Keefe, a registered dietitian and Kansas City area nutrition counselor, said some of her toughest weight loss cases are among those who drink a lot of calories.

"It's huge," she said, "this infusion of soda pop and things like Gatorade, Powerade, Fruitopia. And coffee drinks with all the syrups in them."

While the body must deal with all the added calories of sweetened drinks, those beverages don't send the "full" message to the brain that comes with food, O'Keefe said. The result is way too many calories, day after day.

One way to combat the desire for soda, she said, is with sparkling water.

Besides the sweetness, it's the feel of carbonation in the mouth that holds much of soda's appeal, so switching to no-calorie flavored carbonated water - her family likes Lacroix - can help break the soda habit.

Diet drinks? Not a favorite of many nutritionists. They worry about the potential ill effects of some compounds in diet sodas. And there's concern that artificial sweeteners might actually increase cravings, leading to more eating and added pounds.

But new studies by researchers in Denmark found that diet cola behaved the same as water in terms of appetite and weight gain. Bjorn Richelsen of Aarhus University Hospital said four beverages were analyzed: Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, milk and water.

One hypothesis was that Diet Coke would enhance appetite, but that was not the case, Richelsen said in an email. No difference was found in the calorie intake of study participants in the hours after drinking the diet soda or water. And in a longer-term study, no weight gain was associated with Diet Coke.

More study is needed about the effects of soda drinking in large quantities and over time, nutritionists said.

Jim Heeter hasn't messed with sugary drinks for years, even before his recent weight loss competition with Kansas City Mayor Sly James. But the president of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce said his strategy included upping his water consumption "enormously" while throttling back on Diet Coke.

One treat he won't give up is an occasional Lost Trail diet root beer.

"Other people might get home and have a martini or Scotch," said Heeter, who won the five-month "Not So Big KC Challenge" over James. "I have Lost Trail over cracked ice. No caffeine. No calories."

Ann Davis, the director of the University of Kansas Healthy Hawks program, the one attended by Montana Ivory, said that while the weight program emphasizes beverages with no calories, it doesn't take a stand on diet drinks.

"We leave that up to families," she said. "Some parents are OK with diet drinks, and some are not."

The program gives teens like Montana examples of how much exercise it would take to burn off the calories in sweetened beverages, Davis said, and shows them that not just soda but juices and sports drinks are crammed with calories.

If they drink 400 extra calories, a big cola of about 36 ounces, for instance, it would take at least an hour of brisk walking to burn through those calories. They complete a worksheet to help them make the link: calories in, calories out.

Adults also need the wake-up call. Jan Schmidt, exercise physiologist and trainer at Bene-Fit Health and Fitness, said that while helping clients with exercise she also asks about extra calories they may be consuming. Beverages often top the list.

Schmidt recommends a weaning program. Assess those extra calories and start by cutting them in half. If you drink 200 calories a day in a sweetened beverage, make it 100.

"A reduction of 100 calories a day knocks off 10 pounds in a year," she said. "That's how it adds up."

Cutting back or going unsweetened, of course, is a tough challenge for almost everyone, Davis said.

"Knowing what you should do and actually doing it are two very different things," she said.

    ZERO TO 80 CALORIES

Even if you take the "drink no calories" pledge to keep the weight off, some liquid calories inevitably will slip through your lips. You're allowed, but the key is to be conscious that when you drink your calories, they count. Sixteen ounces of a soft drink or fruit juice could easily pack 200 calories.

Nutritionists and dietitians offer a few suggestions for no- and low-calorie beverages to replace sugary drinks:

Plain water. Add a fruit slice, but just a slice.

Flavored carbonated water. The mouth enjoys the zing from the carbonation.

Unsweetened tea and coffee. Watch the caffeine.

Diet drinks. Imbibe as a "transition" from sugary drinks to unsweetened ones, or only occasionally.

Low-sodium vegetable juice. About 50 calories in 8 ounces.

Skim milk. Don't forget your calcium. About 80 calories in 8 ounces.

The event occurs once a week, starting Thursdays at 8:00 PM my time and running until the following Monday at midnight.

    1. Simply link up a vegan recipe you made (and posted about) that contains health-supporting ingredients. This means any good-for-you whole foods, especially those with antioxidant properties or ?functional foods? (ie, offering naturally medicinal or health-promoting qualities?such as garlic, coconut oil, all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.)?but any fresh, real food is welcome! No-no?s include white flour or sugar, highly processed foods, or animal products. Items like vegan protein powder, grain or bean flours, or coconut milk are fine even though they are technically ?processed,? since they either contain a single ingredient, or could technically be made at home. Also, if you render a recipe vegan-friendly by adding a vegan option to your ingredients, your post will be good to go!
    2. This is a recipe event. Your blog post must contain a recipe.
    3. You may link up older posts from your archives as long as they contain a link to this post. Please do not link up any posts you have previously shared at an earlier Wellness Weekend event.
    4. Please link the post with your recipe, NOT your blog?s home page or another event page. The post must contain a recipe.
    5. You may submit up to three recipes, but please follow the guidelines for each one individually. ONLY ONE THUMBNAIL FROM EACH BLOG POST, PLEASE. If your post contains two suitable recipes, link up once and people will still see all your fabulous recipes when they click on the linky. :)
    6. Please mention this event and include a link back to this post so that others can find all the recipes posted!
    7. Feel free to use the blog badge, above (or see the left sidebar of this page?if you need the html code, let me know and I?ll send it to you). Many thanks to Adrienne of Whole New Mom for setting up the badge code for me!

ace rice shared Katharine Richardson's blog post on Facebook

You might not immediately recognize his name, but George Marinelli?is one of rock and roll?s most talented and established musicians. With a career spanning more than four decades, Marinelli is best known as Bonnie Raitt?s longtime guitarist and band mate. He is also an original member of Bruce Hornsby and The Range, and has worked as a session musician, producer, or engineer for revered artists including Vince Gill, Art Garfunkel, Dixie Chicks and Joe Ely.?

George Marinelli has just released his third album, ?Believe?, and his keen musicianship is on prominent display throughout the album. He played every instrument on the recording; contributing vocals, guitar, bass, keys, drums, mandolin, and percussion. From studio work to graphic design, the multi-talented artist handled all aspects of the project. Fans will enjoy an exciting blend of musical influences, running the gamut from roots to world to R&B.

George Marinelli is currently performing on Bonnie Raitt?s Slipstream tour until the end of 2013. He spoke to me during a break from the intense tour schedule.

KR:??????????? You produced your new album ?Believe.? What other projects have you produced?
GM:??????????? I produced my previous cd, "Necessary Evil", and EP "Postcard from Kuala Lumpur". I?ve produced projects by a dozen or so other artists and I plan on producing more in the future.

KR:??????????? How would you describe your musical style(s)?
GM:??????????? I'd have to say my taste is pretty eclectic, running from rootsy to world to R&B, etc. I tend to get bored doing any one type of music, so I write in as many styles as possible while trying to maintain a consistent and genuine sound.

KR:??????????? Where did you record the album?
GM:??????????? "Believe" was recorded at my home studio, WingDing. I've done all of my projects there. It?s a pretty small, simple, and comfortable setup. My studio's motto is "WingDing Studio, where some of the gear works some of the time."

KR:??????????? How many different instruments did you play for the album?
GM:??????????? I actually played all the instruments (guitar, bass, keys, drums, mandolin, and percussion) on the album, and I did all of the vocals. I even did the album graphics. I enjoy all the aspects of it, and if I can keep the spontaneity and spark, I'm happy to do it like that. I don't always plan to "record an album?. I just write songs, one at a time, over a long period and then look at how many I've come up with when I feel it's time for an album. Most of the time, I find I?ve done it all alone. That was the case with "Believe?.

KR:??????????? Can you give us some technical details on the production?
GM:??????????? I use Protools 7.4, but I don?t use many tracks. I doubt anything on this album even hit 20 tracks. A couple of songs have a few mics on the drums. I did program drums on two songs. I mix in the box.? There?s nothing real special about my recording technique. If anything, it's pretty lo-tech and lo-fi. No super-expensive gear. It's what you play that people hear. If they like it, they accept it, and that's good. If they don't like it, they don't accept it, and that's bad.

KR:??????????? When did you write these songs?
GM:??????????? Some were finished at the beginning of 2012, right before the current (Bonnie Raitt) tour started, and some go back a few years.

KR:??????????? How do you approach songwriting?
GM:??????????? It varies. Usually when I'm writing alone, it's me and a guitar. On a rare occasion, it's the keyboard. I'll come up with a musical bit, and then proceed. I wrote about half the new album with a terrific lyricist named Rich Wayland. He's really flexible and can come up with great words after I dump music on him. He comes up with some terrific lyrics before we even have a note and he's a good piano and melody guy. There?s a lot of give and take and we don't pour over things for too long, which I enjoy.?

KR:??????????? And tell us about your other co-writer, Jodi Siegel?
GM:??????????? Jodi and I haven't yet met in person. She found me on MySpace a few years back, sent me her cd which I really dug, and then sent me some lyrics via email. We spoke on the phone, too. She actually lives close to where I used to live in LA but we'd never crossed paths.?

KR:??????????? Can you give us the inspiration behind some of your favorite songs on the album?
GM:??????????? "Believe"- When I wrote this, there were two couples who were really close friends of mine. They were both struggling with their relationships. One couple survived, and the other didn't. I tried to put myself in the position of a person trying to reach out for a little faith and trust from the other.

"Love Can Be Like That", written with Rich Wayland, is one of my favorites. It?s about thinking you're over someone when you're really not.

"Taller than Yesterday"is about not taking the easier path and not accepting repetition as success.? It?s about trying to improve who you are and what you do every day.

"State Lines?, written with Jodi Siegel is a bit cryptic, which I find kind of charming. And we both wanted it to be in that Afro-Pop style, which I really love.

"Tokens of a Broken Love?,another one of my favorites and was also written with Rich Wayland. I think his lyrics on this one are a gem. We came up with a nice, slightly Latin feel on it. What gives it a neat sound is that there isn't one guitar that's in normal or standard tuning. All of the guitars are high string, excepting one baritone.

KR:??????????? You are in the middle of a huge tour with Bonnie Raitt. How long have you performed with her?
GM:??????????? I first played on Bonnie's "Longing in Their Hearts" album back in '93. I?ve been with her since then, excluding a couple of years in the late 90?s. It's such a terrific gig for me because of the variety and depth of material, and everyone is extended family after all these years. We?re friends first, which is pretty rare.

KR:??????????? You are really an exceptional guitar player. When did you first start playing?
GM:??????????? I got my first guitar at age 15 and took two lessons. The teacher was a nice cat who was trying to teach me to read music, but I was faking it and playing it by ear. I lasted two weeks. The rest is self-taught.

KR:??????????? Who were / are some of your influences?
GM:??????????? As most in my age group, I was influenced by The Beatles, The Stones, Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, R&B, etc. But even at a young age, I was more drawn to songs and good writers. I've always been pretty open-minded about music, and never stuck to one genre. Like I said earlier, I bore easily. I am turned on by any really good music with depth and style.

KR:??????????? What music are you listening to that you would like to turn others on to?
GM:??????????? I often try to turn younger players on to Brazilian music.? If you go back to the 60?s and 70?s music of Brazil, there's a lot of cool stuff you can learn from and incorporate into anything you're doing. There's tons of great stuff from all over the world.? With the internet, it's not that hard to search around and get re-ignited.

KR:??????????? What is your favorite guitar(s) these days?
GM:??????????? I've always favored Fender Strats and Teles.

KR:??????????? Tell us about other gear you use.
GM:??????????? I?ve been using Roland Boss GT multi-effects pedals pretty exclusively since 1999. In the studio I use a Dr. Z Maz Jr, an old brown-face Fender Bandmaster, a couple of little Fender Pro Jrs from the early '90s. On this particular tour with Bonnie, I'm using a couple of the new Ampeg line, the GTV15-112 with a couple of 12" ext cabs, also Ampeg. Nice little 15 watt amps.

KR:??????????? What is one thing that people don?t know about you that might surprise them?
GM:??????????? Well, if they don't know by now, I'm nuts about NFL football!?

The all-new Mazda6, which goes on UK sale in January 2013 in saloon and Tourer body styles, has been given a three-year/60,000-mile residual value uplift of up to 7.5% versus the outgoing model, according to data from vehicle information providerCAP.

    ?

Major MPG and carbon dioxide emission improvements across the all-new Mazda6 range due to SKYACTIV Technology have contributed to the residual value enhancements.

    ?

Residual value predictions for the Mazda6 petrol-engined saloon range average 31.8%, the petrol-engined Tourer 33%, the diesel-engined saloon 31.6% and the diesel-engined Tourer 32.7%. Versus the current Mazda6, those figures represent an average uplift of 7.5% (petrol-engined Tourer), 7% (petrol-engined hatch as no saloon available), 2.6% (diesel-engined Tourer) and 2.4% (diesel-engined hatch as no saloon available).

    ?

Those forecasts, according toCAP, put the new Mazda6 comfortably ahead in the residual value stakes against the likes of the Vauxhall Insignia (average 23%), Ford Mondeo (28%), Volkswagen Passat (29%), Honda Accord (30%) and Toyota Avensis (31%).

    ?

Mazda forecasts that its biggest fleet seller in the range will be the 2.2 litre 150 PS SKYACTIV-D saloon SE-L Nav with a P11D value of ?23,140, emissions at a class-leading 108 g/km and combined cycle fuel economy of 67.3 mpg.CAPpredicts that the model will have a three-year/60,000-mile residual value of ?7,475 (32%).

    ?

In-depth analysis reveals that over three-years/60,000 miles the anticipated best-selling model in the new Mazda6 range will depreciate by ?15,665 which means it is a better choice for fleet operators than rivals such as the BMW 320d, Audi A4, Toyota Avensis, Honda Accord and Vauxhall Insignia (see chart below).

    ?

The top-selling diesel Tourer in the all-new Mazda6 range is predicted to be the 2.2 litre 150 PS SE-L Nav, which has emissions of 116 g/km and combined cycle fuel economy of 64.2 mpg. The model, with a P11D value of ?23,890, is forecast to have a residual value of ?7,975 (33%) at three years/60,000 miles.

    ?

Jeff Knight, editor of Monitor,CAP?s residual value forecast guide, said: ?The all-new Mazda6 is a large car with a striking road presence, with excellent cabin space for front and rear passengers.

    ?

?Key from a fleet perspective is emissions; like the recently launched Mazda CX-5 the Mazda6 has been built around the manufacturer?s SKYACTIV Technology. This enables the 150 PS diesel engine to deliver a CO2 figure for the saloon of 108 g/km placing it at least one company car benefit-in-kind tax band below virtually all the competition.

    ?

?However, CO2 emission performance and MPG is also critical for the used car market in respect of petrol engine cars, as buyers have a greater affinity to such models than the fleet market hence the greater residual value uplift.

    ?

?Together with high levels of specification, a more premium interior and excellent future residual values, the all-new Mazda6 should win a place at the front and centre of company car choice lists.?

    ?

Mazda head of fleet Steve Tomlinson said: ?Residual value forecasts for the all-new Mazda6 put the model ahead of key rivals from volume marques and enables the car to close in on premium badge models, which is what we hoped.

    ?

?Given the competitive pricing of the Mazda6 and the fact that on a model-for-model basis it beats key rivals in terms of price, MPG, CO2 emissions, standard specification and power, we anticipate strong residual values to be another vital attraction to fleet operators.

    ?

?Total cost of ownership is a key barometer for fleet chiefs in making their company car decisions and the forecasted first class all-new Mazda6 residual values, which make-up a large percentage of a model?s overall whole life cost figure, will contribute to triggering significant sales.?

Verizon Windows Phone 8 device in stores; some shortages already?

As promised last week, Verizon Wireless has now started selling its first two Windows Phone 8 devices in its stores. The nation's biggest wireless carrier, and the one with the biggest LTE network, now has the HTC Windows Phone 8X (in black and the exclusive red color) for $199.99 with a new two year contract.? It also has the exclusive on the Nokia Lumia 822, which it sells for $99 with a two year contract and a $50 rebate. It comes in black, white and grey colors.

This is a big move for Verizon, which launched Windows Phone 7 devices in 2010 but bypassed selling any of the Windows Phone 7.5 products from HTC, Samsung and Nokia in 2011 and later in 2012. It's also big for Microsoft, who have wanted more visibility for Windows Phone 8 products.

As always, if you want to go to an official Verizon Wireless store to purchase these new devices, it might be a good idea to call ahead to see if they are actually in stock. Calls to three Verizon stores in the Greenville, SC area showed that they had the Nokia Lumia 822 in stock but the HTC Windows Phone 8X was just on display at those stores with none actually available for sale yet.

Verizon will also have an exclusive on the Windows Phone 8-based Samsung ATIV Odyssey device, but there's no word on when it will be launched.
