How to accept Game Center friend requests on iPhone and iPad

If you have an iPhone or iPad, you've got Game Center. Once you log in, you're ready to start playing games with other opponents. You can share your Game Center ID with others and receive invites to become friends. From there you can view each other's achievements and challenge each other to games. If you aren't sure how to accept a Game Center friend request, here's how.

While you can always accept friend requests as soon as they come in by tapping on the notification, you can also accept multiple invites at once or accept individual ones at your own liesure.

1. Launch the Game Center app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
2. Tap on the Requests tab on the bottom right of the lower navigation menu.
3. Here you'll see a list of all the people that are requesting to be friends with you.
4. Either tap on individual names and tap the Accept or Ignore button or scroll down to the bottom and you'll see an Accept All and Ignore All button. Choose one of them.

That's it. The contacts will either be added to your Game Center friends list or rejected based on which option you chose.

Chili and Chowder Competition Helps Children in Need of Therapy ...

Augusta - It may be spring, but this weather still calls for some chili to keep you warm.

The 12th annual Chili Chowder Challenge took place at the Augusta Armory on Saturday afternoon.

The event helps raise money for the Children's Center, an organization which helps young children with things like occupational or speech therapy.

This year, over 15 restaurants participated in the big cook off.

Exec. Dir., Children's Center, Jonathan Leach said "As our funding gets leaner every year, we're asked to do more with less. We really have to look to our local communities to kind of fill the gap between what it actually costs to provide quality service fees from the service that we get."

The Liberal Cup restaurant walked away winners today, but the big winner is the Children's Center. Organizers estimate they raised over $40,000.

Physical activity during youth may help reduce fracture risk in old age

Mar. 23, 2013 ? Get out there and regularly kick that soccer ball around with your kids, you may be helping them prevent a broken hip when they are older, say researchers presenting their work at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's (AOSSM) Specialty Day in Chicago, IL.

"According to our study, exercise interventions in childhood may be associated with lower fracture risks as people age, due to the increases in peak bone mass that occurs in growing children who perform regular physical activity," said lead author, Bjorn Rosengren, MD, PhD of Skane University Hospital, Malmo, Sweden.

Rosengren and his colleagues conducted a population-based controlled exercise intervention for six years in children age 7-9 years in Malmo, Sweden. In the intervention group 362 girls and 446 boys received 40 minutes of daily physical education at school. The control group of 780 girls and 807 boys received 60 minutes of physical education per week. Researchers registered incident fractures in all participants and followed skeletal development annually. During the time of the study there were 72 fractures in the intervention group and 143 in the control group resulting in similar fracture risks. The increase in spine bone mineral density was higher in both the boys and girls in the intervention group.

During this same time, researchers performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of 709 former male athletes with a mean age of 69 years and 1,368 matched controls with a mean age of 70 years to determine how many had suffered fractures and rates of bone density loss. Within the former athletes group, bone mass density dropped only minimally from +1.0 to +0.7 standard deviations compared to the control group.

"Increased activity in the younger ages helped induce higher bone mass and improve skeletal size in girls without increasing the fracture risk. Our study highlights yet another reason why kids need to get regular daily exercise to improve their health both now and in the future," said Rosengren.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? College basketball, meet Florida Gulf Coast.

A school so new it wasn't eligible for the NCAA tournament until last year busted a load of brackets Friday night.

With 24 points from Sherwood Brown and a healthy dose of swagger, FGCU upset second-seeded Georgetown 78-68 in the second round of the South Regional.

"This is our first time being in the NCAA tournament. To actually go out there and win that first game, it means something really special to us," said Brown, who was the first of the players to head toward the Florida Gulf Coast cheering section with several seconds still on the clock.

The Eagles used a 21-2 second-half run to pull away from the Hoyas and then held on in the final minute to become just the seventh No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2.

"It's an unbelievable feeling. We played a very tough team in Georgetown. They have great players. They're a historic school," forward Chase Fieler said. "So being a newer school it's very exciting for us to be able to win a game like that and for the NCAA history. That's exciting and impressive to be a part of that."

Bernard Thompson had 23 points for Florida Gulf Coast, the champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

FGCU (25-10) will play seventh-seeded San Diego State, which beat No. 10 seed Oklahoma 70-55, in the third round on Sunday.

"We decided we can play with anybody and we did," said FGCU point guard Brett Comer, who finished with 12 points,10 assists and just two turnovers.

Comer was part of a play late in the game that almost brought down the house, throwing an alley-oop pass from the corner that Fieler grabbed and threw down with a one-handed dunk.

"Nothing special. It's something me and him have done this year," Comer said. "We knew what was going to happen there. Time and place didn't matter. I knew he'd catch it. You saw the result. The whole place went nuts and we really got the momentum from there."

Said Fieler: "That might be the highest I've ever jumped. We'll have to check the video. Brett has great vision. That was his 10th assist. He just threw it up and I had to go get it."

Just a night before, Harvard ? the nation's oldest university, founded in 1636 ? pulled off a major upset over third-seeded New Mexico. Now, one of its youngest ? FGCU's first student was admitted in 1997 ? has an even bigger one.

The Eagles' monster run gave them a 52-33 lead with 12:28 to play. The Hoyas staged a furious rally to get within 72-68 with 52 seconds left but the Eagles went 6 of 10 from the free throw line to seal it.

"In the second half, we pushed the ball, we got out, we ran, we made shots, got some alley-oop dunks to energize the crowd. I'm very proud of our players," said coach Andy Enfield, whose wife ? supermodel Amanda Marcum ? was shown several times on the arena's big screen.

For those who don't know FGCU, and that was probably plenty of people as of Friday afternoon, Florida Gulf Coast is a state university in Fort Myers with an enrollment of about 12,000 students.

This is FGCU's first tournament and Georgetown's 29th, including the 1984 national championship. But the Eagles did beat Miami earlier this season.

It was another disappointing NCAA exit for the Hoyas (25-7), who have lost to a double-digit seed in their last four appearances. The last time they made it to the second weekend of the tournament was in 2007, when they reached the Final Four.

"I wish I could, trust me, more than anyone on this Earth," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said when asked if he could figure out the losses to lower seeds. "I've tried to analyze it, think about it, look at it, think about what we should do differently and I don't know."

Markel Starks had 23 points for the Hoyas, a tri-champion of the Big East regular season and one of the top defensive teams in the nation.

That didn't seem to bother the Eagles much.

While Georgetown came in allowing 55.7 points per game, FGCU beat that number with 9:22 to play when it led 57-40. The Hoyas allowed opponents to shoot 37.6 percent from the field, fourth-best in the country. The Eagles shot 42.9 percent (21 of 49) and they held the Hoyas to 37.5 percent from the field (24 of 64).

Big East Player of the Year Otto Porter Jr. had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting and 11 rebounds. On this night he couldn't match Brown, the A-Sun's player of the year.

Porter, a sophomore who said he hasn't made a decision yet on whether to return to Georgetown next season, said "winning is hard."

"They got out in transition, and that started their run," he said. "They started knocking down the shot. It's hard when a team is knocking down shots like that."

The FGCU fans who made the trip to Philadelphia were loud all game. The rest of the crowd at Wells Fargo Center joined them during the big run and there's nothing to bring fans together like rooting against a heavy favorite.

"I don't think anybody on our team has ever played in front of that many people," said reserve forward Eddie Murray, who had nine points.

The Eagles charged at their fans when the game ended and ? after some of them shook hands with Hall of Famer and TV analyst Reggie Miller ? it was a celebration that could be felt all the way to back to campus.

The Hoyas used an 8-0 run to take an 18-11 lead midway through the first half but that's where their offense went cold ? very cold.

The Eagles closed the half on a 13-4 run as Georgetown missed nine straight shots and committed five turnovers. FGCU took a 24-22 lead on two free throws by Eddie Murray with 26 seconds left. In another example of how out of synch Georgetown was offensively, the Hoyas passed the ball around as the halftime horn sounded, allowed the Eagles to keep their lead.

As the night wound down, one fan yelled at the Eagles to stick around Philly a couple of more days.

"Get a cheese steak, kid! Get a cheese steak!"

The crowd then paid Florida Gulf Coast the ultimate tribute: the E-A-G-L-E-S! Eagles! chant reserved for their favorite NFL team.

Researchers use metamaterials to observe giant photonic spin hall effect

Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have once again demonstrated the incredible capabilities of metamaterials ? artificial nanoconstructs whose optical properties arise from their physical structure rather than their chemical composition. Engineering a unique two-dimensional sheet of gold nanoantennas, the researchers were able to obtain the strongest signal yet of the photonic spin Hall effect, an optical phenomenon of quantum mechanics that could play a prominent role in the future of computing.

"With metamaterial, we were able to greatly enhance a naturally weak effect to the point where it was directly observable with simple detection techniques," said Xiang Zhang, a faculty scientist with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division who led this research. "We also demonstrated that metamaterials not only allow us to control the propagation of light but also allos control of circular polarization. This could have profound consequences for information encoding and processing."

Zhang is the corresponding author of a paper describing this work in the journal Science. The paper is titled "Photonic Spin Hall Effect at Metasurfaces." Co-authors are Xiaobo Yin, Ziliang Ye, Jun Sun Rho and Yuan Wang.

The spin Hall effect, named in honor of physicist Edwin Hall, describes the curved path that spinning electrons follow as they move through a semiconductor. The curved movement arises from the interaction between the physical motion of the electron and its spin ? a quantized angular momentum that gives rise to magnetic moment. Think of a baseball pitcher putting spin on a ball to make it curve to the left or right.

"Light moving through a metal also displays the spin Hall effect but the photonic spin Hall effect is very weak because the spin angular momentum of photons and spin-orbit interactions are very small," says Xiaobo Yin, a member of Zhang's research group and the lead author of the Science paper. "In the past, people have managed to observe the photonic spin Hall effect by generating the process over and over again to obtain an accumulative signal, or by using highly sophisticated quantum measurements. Our metamaterial makes the photonic spin Hall effect observable even with a simple camera."

Metamaterials have garnered a lot of attention in recent years because their unique structure affords electromagnetic properties unattainable in nature. For example, a metamaterial can have a negative index of refraction, the ability to bend light backwards, unlike all materials found in nature, which bend light forward. Zhang, who holds the Ernest S. Kuh Endowed Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California (UC) Berkeley, where he also directs the National Science Foundation's Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center, has been at the forefront of metamaterials research. For this study, he and his group fashioned metamaterial surfaces about 30 nanometers thick (a human hair by comparison is between 50,000 and 100,000 nanometers thick). These metasurfaces were constructed from V-shaped gold nanoantennas whose geometry could be configured by adjusting the length and orientation of the arms of the Vs.

"We chose eight different antenna configurations with optimized geometry parameters to generate a linear phase gradient along the x direction," says Yin. "This enabled us to control the the propagation of the light and introduce strong photon spin-orbit interactions through rapid changes in direction. The photonic spin Hall effect depends on the curvature of the light's trajectory, so the sharper the change in propagation direction, the stronger the effect."

Since the entire metasurface sample measured only 0.3 millimeters, a 50-millimeter lens was used to project the transmission of the light through the metamaterial onto a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for imaging. From the CCD images, the researchers determined that both the control of light propagation and the giant photonic spin Hall effect were the direct results of the designed meta-material. This finding opens up a wealth of possibilities for new technologies.

"The controllable spin-orbit interaction and momentum transfer between spin and orbital angular momentum allows us to manipulate the information encoded on the polarization of light, much like the 0 and 1 of today's electronic devices," Yin says. "But photonic devices could encode more information and provide greater information security than conventional electronic devices."

Yin says the ability to control left and right circular polarization of light in metamaterial surfaces should allow for the formation of optical elements, like highly coveted "flat lenses," or the management of light polarization without using wave plates.

"Metamaterials provide us with tremendous design freedom that will allow us to modulate the strength of the photonic spin Hall effect at different spatial locations," Yin says. "We knew the photonic spin Hall effect existed in nature but it was so hard to detect. Now, with the right metamaterials we can not only enhance this effect we can harness it for our own purposes."

This Art Handler's Tattoos Are Fading, But the Pride He Feels for ...

Unlike many people with tattoos, photographer and art handler Jordan Inge has no plans to touch up his body art. Each represents a different time in his life, he says, and he likes the way tattoos stretch and fade, showing the passing of time.

His first tattoo, on his back, faded quickly because he got it at a time when he was surfing a lot and spending a lot of time in the sun. It says "UNITY" and is a tribute to Operation Ivy, a band that he listened to a lot at the time. The tattoo got him a lot of attention from "30 and 40 year old dudes" when he was a teenager and attending Warped Tour or other local punk rock shows. "That always felt pretty good as a little wanna-be punk rocker," he says.

Another tattoo, a circle with one quarter filled in, is meant to fade. The filled-in quarter represents his age when he got the tattoo (25). His mother was 50 at the time and got a corresponding circle with one half filled in. Inge intends to add a hash mark to the circle every five years and maybe even fill in another quarter when he turns 50.

A domino on his right wrist signifies a popular pastime among Inge's closest college friends, a tattoo they all have in different forms. When the group decided to get the tattoos, "everyone started calling out the dominos ... and just like in dominos I had nothing to choose from."

"Illigetimi non carborundum," a family saying, is forever around his upper right arm. It means: "Don't let the bastards wear you down."

An avid camper and hiker, each leg is marked with a logo from two major trails that Inge has conquered. His right leg proudly boasts his completion of the Appalachian Trail, which he hiked going southbound. The Appalachian Trail logo has been modified with a downward spiral to show the direction that Inge hiked. By chance, the tattoo artist that Inge went to for the Appalachian trail tattoo had also hiked the trail and had his own "AT tattoo." His left leg, with the Douglas fir tree, is from the Pacific Crest Trail in California.

His upper left arm features the same truck that Inge drove 300,000 miles for work as an art mover. "It was a cool time in my life", Inge says.

The tattoo is a reminder: "Hey, that was fun, but don't go be a truck driver again."

I am looking to find out the rough costs of SEO for a classified car website selling cars on finance. My original plan was to employ someone full time in house but I am struggling to find somebody suitable. I want to get into at least the top 5/6 results. I know this will not happen over night and that it will be expensive for this sector, but how expensive will it be?
