Scaled-Down: New Nano Device Can Weigh Single Molecules

A tiny resonating beam, just 10 millionths of a meter in length, can measure the mass of a molecule or nanoparticle in real time

Dieters and exercise buffs might feel better about their progress if they tracked their weight loss in daltons. Even a short jog can help you shed a few septillion daltons, a unit of mass often used in biochemistry that is equivalent to the atomic mass unit. (Of course, no weight-conscious individual would want to know their full weight in this unit?the average American male weighs approximately 5 X 1028 daltons.)

Even the megadalton, or one million daltons, is a tiny unit of measure?a gold particle five nanometers across weighs in at just a few megadaltons. (One nanometer is a billionth of a meter.) But researchers at the California Institute of Technology and CEA?Leti, a government-funded research organization in Grenoble, France, have built a scale that weighs single objects even lighter than a megadalton, including nanoparticles and human antibody molecules. The device is the first of its kind to determine the masses of individual molecules and nanoparticles in real time, the researchers reported in a study published online August 26 in Nature Nanotechnology. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

The heart of the device is a nanoelectromechanical resonator?a tiny beam of silicon vibrating at two tones simultaneously. "It's like vibrating a guitar string at the fundamental and a harmonic," says study co-author Michael Roukes, a Caltech physicist. "We're continuously strumming it with an electrostatic excitation." The beam runs diagonally across the photo (above); it measures 10 microns long and 300 nanometers wide. (A micron is one millionth of a meter.)

Tiny arms connecting the ends of the beam to the rest of the device convert the resonator's vibrations into an electrical signal via a phenomenon known as the piezoresistive effect. "The smallest pieces there are flexed slightly, and when they're flexed their resistance changes," Roukes says. "And so we can read out the motion as a change in resistance." A single molecule landing on the beam shifts the frequency of the two tones downward, and from the accompanying change in resistance the researchers can deduce both the mass of the particle and where it landed along the beam.

The device's sensitivity to single molecules allowed the researchers to perform mass spectroscopy?identifying the various particles in a mixture by their masses?on collections of gold nanoparticles five and 10 nanometers in diameter, as well as on the antibody molecule immunoglobulin M, which weighs just under one megadalton. (The natural molecules proved much more consistent in their construction than did the man-made nanoparticles, whose masses fluctuated by a factor of five or so from particle to particle.)

Roukes notes that past resonators were capable of measuring molecular masses, but only after hundreds of identical molecules had been deposited onto the beam. "We couldn't actually know molecule by molecule what their mass was," he says. The new, more sensitive version should allow researchers to perform mass spectroscopy to identify the various particles within a mixed sample. For instance, researchers could analyze a biological specimen to look for a telltale biomarker with a known mass. "If we can do it one by one, now we can start looking at arbitrarily complex mixtures of different things,? he says.

Officials in Russia's violence-plagued Dagestan say a top Muslim religious leader and five of his followers have been killed by a suicide bomber. A spokesman for the republic's police said the female bomber blew herself up at the home of Said Afandi in the village of Chirkei. (AP) ? Russian police on Wednesday identified the female suicide bomber who killed an influential Muslim leader in a terrorist attack that could worsen a longstanding confrontation between radical Islamists and moderate Muslims in the volatile Caucasus region.

Said Afandi, 74, the powerful leader of a Sufi Muslim brotherhood in Russia's unstable province of Dagestan, was killed Tuesday along with six other people, including an 11-year-old boy, in the central village of Chirkei by the bomber, who approached his house disguised as a pilgrim. Afandi's tens of thousands of followers included influential officials, clerics and businessmen.

Police in Dagestan said Wednesday that the bomber was Aminat Kurbanova, a 30-year-old resident of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala. The Interfax news agency claimed she was an ethnic Russian woman who had converted to Islam after marrying an Islamist militant.

Afandi's killing follows a string of attacks on moderate Muslim leaders in the Caucasus who have publicly denounced the spread of radical Islamic groups known as Salafis whose followers advocate an independent state, or emirate, that would include Caucasus and parts of southern Russia that contain a significant Muslim population.

Afandi had recently initiated peace talks between Sufis and Salafis.

Dagestan, a multiethnic and predominantly Muslim province of nearly 3 million people on the oil-rich Caspian Sea, is a focal point of the Islamic insurgency in the Caucasus, and shootings, bombings and police operations against rebels occur there almost daily. Human rights groups accuse security forces and police of fueling the insurgency through extrajudicial killings, abductions and other abuses.

The mystical Muslim orders of Sufis have for centuries been popular in Dagestan and neighboring Caucasus provinces, and their leaders and adherents survived decades of Communist persecution. The Sufi brotherhoods are fiercely opposed to radical and militant Salafis that have mushroomed across the region. The Sufis often pray over the tombs of revered saints, and Salafi puritans condemn worshipping over graves as idolatry.

Tens of thousands of people attended Afandi's funeral Tuesday, and thousands more flocked to his grave Wednesday to pray as Dagestan's secular authorities declared a day of mourning.

The killing of the white-bearded cleric, who appeared in public wearing a traditional hat made of astrakhan lamb fur, could lead to more violence in Dagestan and the Caucasus, experts say.

"These are attempts to abort peacekeeping efforts in the region and to escalate the situation in southern Russia," Ruslan Gereyev of the Center of Islamic Studies in Dagestan's provincial capital, Makhachkala, told the Kavkazsky Uzel online publication.

If the killing goes unpunished, the authority of Afandi's influential followers will be questioned, said Alexei Malashenko of the Carnegie Moscow center. "If the main figure is killed and his followers are silent, this will lead to a major reappraisal of values" in Dagestan, he told The Associated Press.

Female suicide bombers are often called "black widows" in Russia because many of them are the wives, or other relatives, of militants who have been killed by security forces. Some women are driven more by personal revenge for slain relatives than by promises of martyrdom and reward in the afterlife, while others are sent on such attacks against their will, experts say.

In April 2010, two women from Dagestan blew themselves up on Moscow's subway system, killing 40 people and wounding 121 during a morning rush hour.

At least two dozen female suicide bombers have carried out terrorist attacks on security officers and civilians in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes in the country since 2000.

Dagestan's provincial leader, Magomedsalam Magomedov, said Wednesday that civilian paramilitary squads should be created to prevent and repel attacks by radical Islamists.

(AP) ? Syrian activists say rebels have shot down a regime warplane over the northern province of Idlib.

The government had no immediate comment, and the report couldn't be independently confirmed.

The Local Coordination Committees, an activist group, and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say the plane was seen crashing Thursday near the Abu Zuhour air base.

Idlib-based activist Alaa al-Din says the warplane was shot down by heavy machine guns.

A video broadcast on Al-Arabiya shows what appears to be a parachute and rebels cheering and claiming it belonged to be the pilot. The video's authenticity could not be verified.

A new school year can be stressful and it is vital that kids maintain a nutritious diet to stay focused and healthy. Give them a balanced meal of omelettes and yogurt or whole wheat cereals to help kick start their day.
For snacks, pack their lunch boxes with fruits, veggies and some light sweets. Pop over to your nearest supermarket and get your ingredients for the perfect breakfast by opting for wholegrain and organic substitutes. A great tip to get your child excited about the day is having them help you in the cooking or preparation process.

Where to shop:
Megamart (17 341-070); Al Jazeera Supermarket; Midway; Waitrose; Lulu Hypermarket.

Extra-curricular activities
Teach your child to balance work and play early in their lives by assorting a dedicated time for fun activities. Joining clubs or groups outside of school can help a student build up character and self-esteem by learning things that they otherwise wouldn?t.

Being a part of something outside of school can also help children explore their social skills and make new friends. Make sure that they are enjoying the activity by having them participate in something that they show interest in. If your child is a budding athlete, then a good tennis, football or basketball club would be a productive way to spend their free time. For the artsy child, have them join an arts and crafts class for kids.

Where to ?play?:
Awali Riding Club; Bahrain Music Institute; Bahrain Science Centre;Bahrain Tennis Club; Berlitz; Caf? Ceramique; Reza?s Martial Arts Center; Rugby Football Club; World Beat Fitness Center.

Cabinet Hardware - Decorative Cabinet Hardware is a Design ...

The small details can make a huge difference in the look and feel of a kitchen or bathroom. For example, beautiful cherry cabinets would look marred or off-kilter with a pull-knob that was covered with dirt or was broken. The knobs and pulls on a cabinet are an important part of the overall design and style of the kitchen or bathroom, so it is important to make sure your kitchen has the appropriate cabinet hardware to keep it looking great. Below, read up about the different types of hardware available to you.

Traditional

A kitchen more on the traditional side will do well with a traditional cabinet knob. A traditional pull has classic lines and is a bit more on the decorative side. It can often be reminiscent of an older style with swooping lines and intricate scroll shapes. The knobs in a traditional style are often round buttons of pewter, brass or nickel. When the traditional type of home is decorated, it is done with versatility but with a bit of an old-world feel.

Modern Modern cabinet hardware made with simple, clean lines and shiny finishes. Modern designs have bold shapes without extra flair or intricacies. Modern pulls and knobs are the same. They often have one contemporary design and do not overly emphasis their curves with extra complexities. The home that uses a modern pull is one with a simple, minimalistic expression and vibe. It is not overdone.

Transitional Transitional style of knobs and pulls can be an eclectic mix of curves, lines and design charm. They are made to be a transition and a complex point where other styles converge. The home may be a mixture of a modern aesthetic with a few punches of traditional. This variety of knob would be perfect in a home like that.

Exotic Exotic knobs and pulls are a mixture of styles, textures and designs to create a quirky mixture that does not fit in any one category. They are used in homes whose occupants do not feel the need to define their way of expressing themselves in a design sense. Any style knob can be installed in a kitchen or bathroom cabinet. It is up to the home owner to design their style and their taste to suit their own needs. If the homeowner wants traditional cabinets with exotic pulls, that homeowner is more than welcome to mix those aesthetics to get their own flavor. That kind of design freedom is why people buy homes and decorate themselves instead of hiring someone to come in and guess at what they would like.

Regardless of what style you choose, your kitchen will look great with fresh new cabinet hardware.

Greenpeace activists intercept Russian ship

MOSCOW (AP) ? More than a dozen Greenpeace activists have intercepted a ship carrying Russian oil workers to a floating oil platform in Russia's Arctic.

Greenpeace said in a statement on Monday that 14 activists chained themselves to the anchor chain of the vessel which was carrying Gazprom's workers to the Prirazlomnaya platform in the Pechora Sea.

Gazprom is pioneering Russia's oil drilling in the Arctic. The state-owned company installed the platform there last year and is preparing to drill the first well.

Environmentalists have warned that drilling in the Russian Arctic could have disastrous consequences because of a lack of technology to deal with a possible spill in this remote region.

Six Greenpeace activists on Friday spent several hours hanging off the side of the Prirazlomnaya, attached to the rig's mooring lines.

Homophobe Actually Completely Correct About the Gay Agenda ...

The new animated flick ParaNorman is a?bunching some Wingnut panties due to its ostensibly gay subtext. Nancy French (perhaps best known for co-writing Bristol Palin?s book, which I think was called Dance Your Way to Teen Pregnancy), highlights ParaNorman?s offending scene:

Norman?s sister has a crush on a kid she tries desperately to impress throughout the movie. After she fails to turn his head, she finally asks him out.

?Sure,? he responds. ?You?re gonna love my boyfriend. He?s like a total chick-flick nut.?

Not that Nancy French could be bothered to actually see the movie before slagging it; she relates the experience of her ?red-state? friend, who reports that there were ?gasps? in the audience after this line, which in liberal talk can be translated as ?laughs.? Her point is that the film normalizes (or ?Normanalizes?) homosexuality for young children.

To which I say: finally something we can agree on. Because she?s right to be afraid. As described, the scene presents homosexuality as just one not-particularly-remarkable aspect of the character?s personality, which qualifies as a powerful and dangerous act for someone like Nancy French, who actively seeks to delegitimatize gay people and gay relationships.

But it may already be too late, even for Nancy French. Earlier in the review, she relates this anecdote:

When we lived in Philadelphia, one of my daughter?s acquaintances was being raised by two women in a lesbian relationship. My friend explained the girl had two mothers and ? essentially ? two fathers, due to the circumstances surrounding the insemination. It was a bit much for my kindergartner to properly process, so I didn?t address the issue with my daughter. After all, I wasn?t going to tell her that ?all families are the same? which was the message the public schools in Philadelphia were pushing. Instead my family?s Christian faith informs how we view sex, marriage, and parenthood, so I figured I?d answer questions only as they came up. At the time, I wasn?t ready to talk to her about heterosexual romance and definitely wasn?t ready to explain our position on homosexual relationships.

Did you catch it? She writes, ?I figured I?d answer questions only as they came up.? But apparently no questions came up. So her kindergarten-age daughter simply accepted the fact that her friend had two mothers, which in my experience is how kids react to gay couples. If you don?t tell them there?s something weird about it then they think nothing of it at all.

And that is Nancy French?s greatest fear.

Quentin Tarantino, Richard Kelly Pay Tribute to Director Tony Scott ...

Filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Richard Kelly were brought together Friday at the Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood by Jeff Goldsmith of The Q&A podcast and Backstory digital magazine to remember the life and career of director Tony Scott. The tribute, titled ?Writing for Tony Scott,? featured a discussion and screenings of True Romance and Domino, Scott films penned by Tarantino and Kelly, respectively.

In a theater packed with film students and movie fans, Goldsmith made the announcement that Scott had been buried earlier that day. Less than a week after Scott took his own life by jumping from the Vincent Thomas Bridge, the mood in the theater could easily have been somber, but the audience erupted with cheers and applause as the lights went out and ?A Tony Scott Film? flashed onscreen and the opening bars of Charlie Sexton?s ?Graceland? heralded the beginning of the director?s gritty fairy tale True Romance.

After the credits rolled, Goldsmith brought out guests of honor Kelly and Tarantino to discuss their experiences writing and working for Scott.

Tarantino admitted he was pleased to see the outpouring of support and love immediately following Scott?s death. ?One of the things that?s actually been kind of gratifying about reading all of this Internet stuff, where everyone?s talking about their favorite Tony Scott movie and stuff, is people were not saying that in 1990,? he said. ?People used to [say] ?Oh, he?s a commercial hack. His stuff is bullshit.? And I loved his shit. I thought it was fantastic.?

True Romance has achieved cult status and is beloved today, but Goldsmith recalled that the film was actually besieged by detractors and negative reviews when it was released. ?Even when True Romance got good reviews, they wouldn?t give Tony the credit for the good reviews,? Tarantino added. ?They would actually say that he glossed up my script ? that he made it too pretty. He made it too vivid.?

Tarantino went even further, comparing Scott to another director who didn?t receive the appreciation he deserved during his lifetime. ?He?s just like Douglas Sirk, man. Douglas Sirk never got any respect in the ?50s,? he said. ?His movies were considered too commercial. Everybody put him down and now they teach classes on him.?

When Goldsmith asked Tarantino about Scott?s restructuring of his original True Romance script, the influential writer/director downplayed the changes. ?It was so easy to restructure that I think they just did it with a Xerox machine,? Tarantino joked before hinting that an alternate cut of the film, which follows the structure of his original draft, is rumored to exist. ?From what I?ve heard, he tried my structure but went nuts with it ? went far beyond what I did. So apparently there?s this really metaphysical avant-garde cut of True Romance floating around out there somewhere.?

Speaking of avant-garde, Scott had been a fan of Kelly?s Donnie Darko, and brought the young director in for a meeting when the conversation finally turned to Domino, a project Scott had been trying to get off the ground for more than 10 years. Kelly described his experience writing for Scott as very collaborative. ?Usually the screenwriter isn?t really welcome on set or he?s sort of only invited on certain days or it?s a very ?keep your distance? sort of a situation, but this was the opposite,? Kelly recalled. ?It was a wonderful, wonderful experience.?

Known for his over-the-top visual style, Kelly explained that Scott inherently understood that cinema is about the overall experience for an audience. ?I remember that in a movie like The Fan, people would complain, ?When it rains at night, they cancel the baseball game,? and Tony was like, ?I don?t care. I want it to be raining.? He understood that they?re movies, and it?s about the experience.?

?It?s easy to talk about Tony and just get lost into the whole visual thing,? Tarantino continued, ?But Tony was one of the best director of actors that there was. Him and Denzel Washington?s relationship was one of the best actor/director combinations of our time.?

As prominent directors in their own right, Goldsmith asked about the experience of writing for a director like Scott. Tarantino admitted that his version of True Romance would have been more cynical, and Christian Slater?s character Clarence would have died at the end. ?I wanted to do that. I wanted to make you fall in love with Clarence and then I wanted to blow his fucking head off. I wanted to do that to you,? Tarantino said, gesturing to the crowd. ?Tony didn?t want to do that to you.?

?He fell in love with Clarence and Alabama, and it became ? in fact, I think he loved them even more than I did,? he continued. ?I think I took them for granted a little bit because Clarence was kind of me, so I could be brazen with me. I could blow my head off and that would be kind of a punk-rock move. Tony loved him and Tony loved Alabama, and it was very important to him that they get away.?

Tarantino admitted he had accused Scott of ?wimping out for commercial bullshit? when he changed the script to give Alabama (played by Patricia Arquette) and Clarence a happy ending, but the director held firm. Launching into a vivid Scott impression, Tarantino said: ?Quentin, I?m not doing it to be a commercial fuck, I?m doing it because I love those fucking kids.?

Kelly also recalled Scott having a similar sensibility while the pair worked on Domino. ?I?m someone who ? I kill all my characters. My movies are depressing and confusing and esoteric and they test horribly, and I?m basically the worst nightmare for like a studio test audience,? he said. ?So it was great to get that endorsement from Tony, that while we were holding on to the radical nature of the screenplay, we could have a happy ending that was still honest and it was earned.?

Goldsmith wondered whether working with Scott had influenced either director and, if so, what they had learned or taken from him. ?For me, it was the importance of research. Tony was a meticulous researcher,? Kelly said. ?I?d never seen anyone push that deep into the research, and it was amazing. I carry that with me forever now.

Tarantino admitted that while his own style is often diametrically opposed to Scott?s, he appreciated the director?s visual aesthetic, and he even went to him for advice after his 2007 feature Grindhouse flopped. ?I felt like the planet Earth broke up with me,? Tarantino said, explaining that Scott was there to console him.?Just remember how lucky you are,? Tarantino recalled Scott saying, ?How lucky you are that you got to make the movie you wanted to make and you got to make it the way you wanted to make it. People backed you. People supported you and you did it.?

At one point in the evening, Goldsmith read a quote from Scott that can be heard on the commentary track of Domino, which reflected many of the characters the director brought to life in his long and impressive filmography: ?I?m always attracted to people going to the dark side who manage to get back and when they get back, they?re different human beings, but having touched those places, it makes them interesting people.?

The entire ?Writing for Tony Scott? discussion will be made available through Goldsmith?s podcast The Q&A.

The Delta Customer Service Nightmare That ... - Business Insider ...

deltaMy Uncle Alan died a week ago. He was 72, and his health had been deteriorating for a while, but on Monday it became final. My mother's only sibling was gone.

Alan passed away while my family was on vacation in Malibu at a house we rented for the week. We knew the funeral would be in Detroit, where Alan lived his entire life, but it would take a day for my aunt to make arrangements.

On Monday, in anticipation, my mother called Delta (since Northwest bought Delta, it's the only airline besides Spirit with direct flights from LAX to Detroit) to inquire about bereavement fares. She spoke to an agent who told her that yes, Delta offers bereavement fares (it's a 50% reduction from the regular fare), and to call back as soon as she knew her flight dates.

Tuesday morning it was decided that Alan's funeral would be Thursday at 11AM.

My father called Delta that same morning. He told the first agent he spoke to (Agent #1) that he would need a bereavement fare for two red-eye flights leaving Wednesday and returning Thursday night after the funeral. (My parents insisted that my two brothers and I stay in California -- it would be too expensive for us all to fly to Detroit last minute.)

Agent #1 told him the cost would be $821 per person, and the bereavement fare wouldn't apply since they weren't staying over a Saturday. My father explained that last Saturday my uncle was still alive, and next Saturday the funeral would be over. Agent #1 asked my father if it would be possible to push the funeral back until next Saturday. (In the Jewish religion, you can't have a funeral on a Saturday.)

My father asked to speak to Agent #1's supervisor.

Supervisor #1 got on the phone and told my father that in the time he had been holding, the rate had increased to $1,396 per person roundtrip. My father asked how that was possible, since he'd been on hold the entire time. Supervisor #1 told him that he should have asked to secure the initial fare when talking to Agent #1.

My father pleaded with Supervisor #1, who, was finally able to get the price back down to $821 per person.

Supervisor #1 booked the flight over the phone for my father. He read my father the official confirmation number, which my father wrote down. We didn't have a printer at the rental house, so my father was relying on that confirmation number (and his credit card) to print his tickets at the airport.

The flights were expensive ($1,642 in total), but they were booked. My mother knew she'd be at her brother's funeral, and she was relieved. She sat down and put together some words to speak at the service.

On Wednesday night my parents packed a carry-on and drove to LAX for their 11:05 PM flight. They arrived at the Delta terminal two and a half hours before takeoff. The self check-in kiosk wasn't working, so they stood in line to talk to a real person. My father handed his credit card to the agent behind the desk (Agent #2) to retrieve the tickets.

Agent #2 shook his head and broke the news to my parents: they had been booked on the 4:55 PM flight, which had left four hours ago.

(Agent #1 had screwed up and booked them on the wrong flight.)

My father explained that no, they had booked the 11:05 PM flight over the phone and he had the confirmation number to prove it. Agent #2 said that was the confirmation number for the 4:55 PM flight.

My father explained the situation as calmly as he could. There was a funeral in 14 hours that they'd miss if they didn't make that flight. Agent #2 reiterated that there was nothing he could do. He suggested my parents call Delta's Customer Care number. They tried, but the phone line had closed at 4 PM PST, five hours ago.

My father asked to speak with a supervisor, who came to the desk after 30 minutes of waiting and told my parents that there was no way to get them on the 11:05 PM flight.

My father asked to speak with the Head Supervisor and was told that the Head Supervisor was dealing with something else at the moment and would come down as soon as he had a moment. Agent #2 told my parents to step away from the desk, and when they did, the agent took the opportunity to leave her post. The desk was empty.

Time was running out.

While they waited for the Head Supervisor, my parents called other airlines to get on another flight. They ran across the airport and tried to get on a United Airways flight that would connect in Chicago. The flight was completely full. They were out of luck.

My parents returned to the Delta desk knowing that they weren't going to make it to the funeral. But they still wanted to express their anger to the Head Supervisor.

A half hour later, the Head Supervisor finally came down to the desk. By that time it was after 11PM. The only plane that would get them to Detroit on time had just taken off.

Head Supervisor looked at Agent #2's screen and said to my father: "It shows here that you rejected the 2 first class tickets we offered you for this flight."

My father explained that no such offer had been made, and if it had, he would have jumped on it.

The Head Supervisor said the computer showed the offer had been made, and there were actually two empty first class seats on the flight that had just left.

(Clearly, Agent #2 was trying to save his butt by logging that he had offered my father those two open seats. But at that point, it didn't matter. The flight was gone and it was Delta's word against my parents'.)

The Head Supervisor gave my parents two $300 vouchers to fly Delta again, and suggested they write a letter to corporate explaining what happened. (My father also called Delta and got a refund on the tickets for the flight they'd missed.)

So, four hours after they left for LAX, my parents returned to the Malibu house to tell us the news.

My mother was going to miss her brother's funeral. And it was all Delta's fault.

The next day my family gathered to watch the live-stream of Alan's funeral on my brother's laptop. My mom's best childhood friend, Rhonda, read my mother's words aloud:

Alan was my big brother. He was my only sibling. He was exactly 12 years and one day older than me...

How to Write a Speech That Kicks Ass

August 27, 2012

As the face of your company, you may find yourself having to give speeches from time to time. Maybe you?re giving a speech at an industry conference, or perhaps you?re just trying to rally the troops at the annual company party. No matter what the venue, there simple fact is that you want your speech to get your message across in a clear, memorable, and exciting way.

But let?s face it ? for most of us, giving a speech is absolutely terrifying. In fact, fear of public speaking is cited by many people as their absolute top fear, ranking even ahead of death. However, I believe that if you?re well prepared and have a kick-ass speech written, you?ll be less nervous and be more likely to succeed.

With that in mind, here are some simple tips to help you write a speech that truly kicks ass.

  • Identify the goal of your speech ? What?s the reason for your speech? Do you have a particular message you need to share? Are you trying to get the audience to take a specific action? Are you hoping to sway opinion? Figure out the goal of your speech, and make sure that everything you write aligns with this.
  • Know your audience ? The more you know about your audience, the better. By pinpointing who your audience is, you can better understand their interests and what type of messaging is most effective at reaching them. This will help you tweak your style and message to fit them best.
  • Figure out what your overarching message is ? At the end of your speech, you want your audience to walk away with a clear, memorable message. Even if they forget all the nitty-gritty details of your speech, you want them to remember the main point you were trying to make. So, keep the big picture in mind, and drill that message into their heads.
  • Keep it short ? Our attention spans are shorter than ever before. I?m a firm believer in getting your message across in as few words as possible. The Gettysburg Address might be the most famous speech of all time, and it was only a few minutes long. Say what you have to say, and be done with it.
  • Speak to your audience?s emotions ? Your speech shouldn?t be about spewing a bunch of facts and figures, even if you?re trying to use them to support your point. Relying too much on logic will bore your audience to death. Instead, find a way to connect with them on an emotional level that connects with their hearts.
  • Edit until you get it right ? You?re not going to write the perfect speech on your first try. It?s a process. You have to keep editing, reading the speech aloud, editing some more, and so on until you get it just right. So, don?t wait until the last minute to write your speech.
  • End powerfully ? A weak ending can ruin an otherwise great speech. You need to strive to end your speech with a simple line that people will remember.

What are some of your best tips for writing a kick-ass speech? Share them by commenting below.

Criminal Defense Attorney Karam Nahas Signed Former Juvenile ...

Nahas represented Arioose as a gangster minded teen for a multitude of criminal charges and recently signed him as a hip-hop artist and songwriter after co-producing ?Supply and Demand? a?music videomaking a statement to the music and entertainment industry.

Criminal Defense Attorney Nahas?signed hip-hop artist and songwriter Arioose after the artist sought after Nahas while learning to write, produce and engineer music in a juvenile prison. While in prison for an armed robbery, Arioose reflected upon his life and took positive steps in his development and planning a career in music after his release.

?Arioose told me he was dedicated to pursue his dream of becoming a rapper but him actually showing me convinced me to help. I thought the first 20 song demo I received was exceptional and I was his only outlet to the professional world,? says?Karam Nahas.

Nahas took interest in the still young aspiring talent after hearing his prison demo and after Arioose demonstrated that he had changed his mindset from being a gangster to a young professional businessman. Nahas and partner Josue Altomonte recently funded a trip to Asia where the rapper spent nearly three weeks in China, and several days with the Shaolin Abbot at the Shaolin Temple in China.

After witnessing Arioose?s progression and development as a?professional music?artist the partners gave the young convict the nod and funded his first?professional music video?and single called, ?Supply and Demand,? making a statement the?music industry?in both the song and video.

?When I looked at the previous videos I was a bit discouraged. I saw raw talent but it was not at the level of a major label artist. In order to compete in the music business you need the storyline but also quality production. Video is as important as the music and the music is critical,? says Richard Victor Mahee, Mahvrick Networks.

Altomonte, Nahas and Mahee came up with a business plan after spending several days in Miami speaking to DJ Radamas, Bla G, and Marco Mall from Florida Film House to turn the video into a series of music videos that would consist of a short feature film series that would be shopped to film festivals and capture Arioose?s character and brand as he describes in his tagline, ?Haitian blood. Italian swag. Spartan heart. Russian mags.

Supply and Demand is a graphic ?R? rated four minute movie trailer music video that features scenes of a Haitian mob boss wielding a sword, a diamond deal gone bad, a sexy Russian dancer licking and fondling a pistol, a Maserati Grandturismo, AK-47?s, and a whole lot of other guns, weapons and scary individuals.

The video tells a short story of betrayal and retribution that ends with a mob style execution and a lesson learned in business. Arioose compares himself to Al Capone touting a tommy-gun wrapped in a Haitian flag and rapping ?Like any other man, I supply and demand.?

The statement that Arioose is making to the music industry is that ?I make the market? and Arioose will take advantage of market situations. There is a demand in a market of genuine hip-hop fans and music lovers for real, gangster rap and musicians with real stories Arioose intends to supply this demand in this digital market where consumers constantly crave more content that has substance, is real, and entertaining.

Supply and Demand and each subsequent video will tell a movie-like story of organized crime with Arioose?s music as the featured soundtrack. The videos, independently and taken together, will portray Arioose?s character and brand. Supply and Demand was written by Arioose, produced by RKE, and directed by Redd Pen Media.

Arioose is a hip-hop artist and songwriter from Elizabeth, New Jersey. He?s performed on the Van Warped Tour, MMA events, Boston UFC Fan Expo, and recently in China. Arioose writes and performs all his own music based on his life and meant to pass knowledge on to his listeners. Although a gangster rapper, Arioose has also been commended for showing young kids how music can be used to inspire, educate, and influence consumers in the area of product branding.

RoughKut Entertainment (RKE) is an artist management firm that manages Arioose and headed by his former criminal defense attorney. RKE?s goal is to manage and develop artists? with raw talent into a refined and viable commercial brand and product.

Unlike the Wu-Tang Clan who rapped about entering the Shaolin, Arioose actually did

enter the Shaolin.?Arioose recently returned from a trip to China where he spend several weeks at the

Shaolin Temple. He trained Kung-Fu, learned about Buddhism and martial arts, and even

met the Abbot and drank tea with him. The Abbot who has made public appearances

recently with former Russian President Vladimir Putin spent several days with Arioose

discussing a vision of using music to reach English speaking youth and sharing the

message of the Shaolin through a song.

While at the Temple, Arioose performed a hip-hop song he authored for the Shoalin

Monks before the Abbot and the monks of Shaolin. The song ?I am Shaolin? was

produced by Fabrizio Sotti for Sotti Entertainment and a short video was shot on location

by ABC news.

Arioose was fortunate to share his time at the Shaolin Temple and train Kung-Fu with

NBA Boston Celtic basketball player Mickael Pietrus. Pietrus stayed at the Shaolin

Temple and also main-land China for sports medicine treatment of his injured knee. ABC

Nightline followed and documented both Pietrus and Arioose, during his time of therapy

and their interactions with Chinese fans. Tens of thousands of Chinese students met and

were entertained by them during a public exhibition.

When asked about China, Arioose smiled and commented, ?One word ? inspirational.

I can?t wait to return. I?m writing hip-hop in Chinese, songs to educate people about

Chinese culture and working on a soundtrack for a Shaolin movie.?

After his trip, Arioose who also performed at the UFC Boston Fan Expo and at MMA

events believes that a Shaolin monk would beat a UFC fighter in a no rules fight and

would like to see it happen.

GENEVA (AP) ? President Barack Obama supporter George Clooney raised almost $15 million for the re-election campaign at the actor's Los Angeles home in May. For his second act, Clooney is set to arrive Monday in Geneva, a center for international organizations and business.

Organizers expect to pull in a more modest amount of about $500,000 from U.S. donors for Obama's campaign, with many flying in to Geneva from around the world.

Americans Abroad for Obama, the event's sponsor, says on its Web site that guests are paying $15,000 per person to dine with Clooney, $5,000 for a photo with him and $1,000 to attend a reception before the dinner. About 30 people are attending the dinner, with about 100 at the reception.

The event is co-hosted by Geneva-based American lawyer Charles C. Adams Jr. and Matthew Barzun, Obama's campaign finance chairman.

The Best Art Schools In America | Visual Graphic Arts - Cotefidel65's ...

Posted on 26 August 2012.

Of the thousands of art schools in America, a few stand out in the art world as the best schools based on academic value. Some are dedicated art schools and some are colleges of general education with outstanding departments.

Rhode Island School of Design enjoys the highest profile in art and design, and superlative respect among experts in the art world. A student with a degree from RISD will have their resume? moved to the top of the pile. It is, however, not without substantial investment. At an average cost of over 100,000.00 per year, only the very serious artist major need apply. That may, in fact, be a large part of the respect given to graduates of this school.

Yale University, already one of the most respected centers of education in America, also enjoys the status of having one of the best art schools in America for undergraduate work. Yale offers courses for several areas of visual art and techniques, as well as art history ? a firm foundation for more intense graduate work.

The Art Institute of Chicago offers one of the most unique opportunities for interpolation of art education and history to be found. AIC is actually located INSIDE one of America?s finest museums offering an outstanding experience for those who relish saturation in their passion and discipline.

Cranbrook Academy of Art, located in southeast Michigan north of Detroit, has developed its reputation for modernism in architecture as well as many other genres in the field.

At Maryland Institute College of Art the primary focus (no pun intended), is on visual arts such as graphic design, illustration, animation, and video film. A graduate from MICA applying at Pixar or Disney would be well positioned for serious consideration.

Virginia Commonwealth University, a public college, offers some eighteen undergraduate majors from fine arts to many of the modern forms of digital and design. This is a quality education at a more affordable price. But, it?s not a shoe-in. Entrance is moderately difficult, so this is not for the student tenuous about a career in this field.

California Institute of the Arts is well-known as the first academy to offer programs in both visual and performing arts. This only makes sense since Hollywood is the entertainment industry?s capital. Majors are offered in fine arts, theater, dance and music.

Carnegie Melon University College of Art offers a well-rounded choice in schools of Art, Architecture, Design, Drama, and Music commensurate with CMU?s overall reputation.

University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) offers possibly the most interesting variety in majors at their School of Arts and Architecture. Majors in World Arts and Cultures, Ethnomusicology, and Urban Design are definitely for out-of-the-box thinkers looking for highly specialized careers.

(AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 80 others in the deadliest disaster in memory for the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet its domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released from the hospital.

Officials said those killed included a 10-year-old boy, and that 17 of the 26 victims were National Guard troops stationed at a post next to the refinery.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning in the country.

"This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Chavez said he ordered a "deep investigation" to determine what caused the explosion.

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said the authorities tried "to save the greatest number of lives."

Officials said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where clouds of dark smoke were still billowing at noon.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the state oil company should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We have sufficient supplies... in the entire country, and our production at the maximum to deal with any situation in our domestic market," Ramirez said. "In that sense, we won't have major effects."

An official of the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Ramirez said. An adjacent National Guard post was severely damaged by the blast, along with nearby homes, he said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said. "The blast wave was of a significant magnitude."

Images in the early hours after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky. One photograph showed an injured man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

"The areas that had to be evacuated were evacuated," Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo said on television, according to the state-run Venezuelan News Agency. "The situation is controlled. Of course there's still a fire rising very high, but ... the specialists tell me there is no risk of another explosion."

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to investigate the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor also was appointed to lead the investigation. Troops were deployed to the area.

Ramirez said that nine storage tanks were damaged. He said supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery, and that the fire had been brought under control, though the flames continued to burn up fuel in some of the tanks.

Firefighters were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks, Ramirez said.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to rise from the refinery.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

While the cause of Saturday's disaster remained unclear, some critics of President Hugo Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company known as PDVSA.

"This tragedy is probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years. Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," said Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former executive of PDVSA. Considering that record overall, Coronel said, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management."

Deadly accidents also occurred in Venezuela's oil and natural gas industry in the past. In 1993, a natural gas pipeline exploded beneath highway in Las Tejerias, engulfing a passenger bus and cars. Officials said 36 people were killed.

On Saturday morning, Ramirez said the explosion occurred in an area of the refinery where storage tanks are located. On television, he showed an aerial map of the rows of tanks where the flames raged.

"All of the events happened very quickly," he said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."

Republican National Convention events delayed due to Isaac

TAMPA -- The events planned for the Republican National Convention on Monday will be postponed due to severe weather predictions near the conference's host city, Republican officials said Saturday.

"The Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th," said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in a statement Saturday. "After consulting with Governor Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will nominate the Romney-Ryan ticket."

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to reach the Florida mainland early next week.

The RNC plans to submit a revised schedule Sunday, Priebus wrote in a memo to convention attendees.

MEMO

DATE: August 25, 2012

FROM: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus @Reince

TO: Interested Parties

RE: RNC Convention

Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th, exact time to follow.

Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area. RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida's emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.

The Republican National Convention will take place and officially nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and the Party has other necessary business it must address. We also are remaining in constant contact with state and federal officials and may make additional schedule alterations as needed.

The Convention staff is working around-the-clock to ensure the delegations housed in storm-impacted areas have alternative housing if needed. The Committee on Arrangements will provide additional information to delegates and alternate delegates who are affected by Isaac by Sunday morning. We will also provide guidance to those delegates and alternate delegates who may encounter travel difficulties due to the storm.

We will begin issuing revised convention programming as early as Sunday.

We have an experienced team that will ensure changes are operationally smooth and create as little disruption as possible. ?The most important concern is safety, but our Convention program will proceed.
