Calvert athletic director and head football coach Coylin Grimes was arrested Friday on federal drug charges.
Grimes was taken into custody Friday morning by members of the Department of Public Safety?s Criminal Investigations Division based in Bryan, according to DPS spokesman Jimmy Morgan.
Morgan said Grimes was charged with conspiracy to deliver cocaine and accessory to criminal activity. The trooper said Grimes would be taken to Bell County and then to the Harwell Federal Detention Center in Waco.
The arrest was part of a Robertson County drug investigation that began early in 2011. Grimes was the 14th person arrested in connection with the probe. Taurean Grimes, the coach?s brother, is among those who have been arrested, according to the DPS.
Calvert superintendent Maxie Morgan said school officials soon will decide on Grimes? job status with the district and whether to hire an interim head football coach or have current assistant Marcus Wortham run the team.
The Calvert football team, which has been a state power at the 6-man level in recent years, began preseason workouts two weeks ago. The Trojans have a scrimmage scheduled for Aug. 25. Calvert will open the season on Aug. 31.
Grimes has been the head football coach at his alma mater since 1999. He has a record of 127-20 and led the Trojans to the 6-man state championship in 2002.
Grimes played 11-man football for the Trojans from 1989-91. He still holds the Calvert record with 144 career pass receptions. Grimes played college football at the University of North Texas.
