Cleveland Browns, other NFL teams likely to pass on this year's crop of supplemental draft candidates

BEREA, Ohio ? The Browns added some playmaking and risk taking to their summer a year ago in selecting receiver Josh Gordon in the second round of the supplemental draft.

The club isn?t expected to be active Thursday as the NFL conducts its annual supplemental draft, starting at 1 p.m.

As first reported by CBSSports.com, six players comprise this year?s field: defensive ends James Boyd (UNLV) and Toby Jackson (Central Florida); defensive tackle Nate Holloway (UNLV); receivers DeWayne Peace (Houston) and O.J. Ross (Purdue); and defensive back Damond Smith (South Alabama).

The group doesn?t possess a sure-fire selection unlike a year ago with Gordon. The 6-3, 225-pound Baylor product arrived in Berea with potential and baggage ? flashing both in his first year as a Brown.

Gordon emerged as the club?s deep threat with 50 receptions for 805 yards, five touchdowns and 16.1 yard average. He also earned a two-game ban to start this season for failing a league drug test. Gordon said codeine in prescription cough medicine triggered a positive. (The league does not reveal the drug.) He tested positive for marijuana three times in college.

Gordon cost the Browns a second-round pick in April?s draft, a fair price assuming he can remain clean. No team will offer a high pick for one of this year?s supplemental candidates. The two receivers, Pearce and Ross, have outside shots at getting drafted.

Pearce (5-11, 190), academically ineligible this season, caught 54 passes for 602 yards and two touchdowns last year at Houston. Ross (5-10, 180), suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, grabbed 56 passes for 474 yards and two TDs last season at Purdue.

Teams can sign these players as undrafted free agents.
